Maine Legislative Retirement Program

As a MainePERS Legislative member, it is important that you stay informed throughout your career so that you can make the most out of your retirement. The following can assist you in that direction.

Download the Maine Legislative Retirement Program booklet from the link below for a general summary of the benefits available. The information in this handbook provides an overview of the main areas of interest within the plan.

The Legislative Retirement Program was established to administer certain benefits that are available to legislators of the State of Maine, who are members of MainePERS. These benefits include:

  • Service retirement benefits, which provide income to a member after the member retires;
  • disability retirement benefits, which provides income to a member if a member becomes disabled (as defined by MainePERS law) while in service and before the member retires; and
  • death benefits, which are paid to a member’s designated beneficiary(ies) (or family or estate, if the member has not designated one or more beneficiaries) if the member dies before he/she retires. (A designated beneficiary is a person the member has named to receive a benefit.)

These benefits, and other information about MLRS membership, are described in the informational piece, An Overview of Benefits for Legislative Members.
