Eligibility

In order to qualify for a disability benefit a member must demonstrate:

  1. One or more medically diagnosable conditions exists;
  2. Functional limitations caused by the conditions make the member unable to perform the essential functions of the member’s employment position with reasonable accommodation; and
  3. The inability can be expected to be permanent.

Also, the incapacity must have existed as of the member’s last date of service in their MainePERS covered employment position.

Note: If a member does not have 5 years of continuous creditable service in MainePERS covered employment,  they may not be eligible for disability retirement if the condition(s) existed prior to beginning MainePERS covered employment

A member who believes they meet these criteria and is interested in exploring Disability Retirement may call MainePERS at (207) 512-3100 to discuss filing an application.
